The NDP is calling on the Pallister government on World Water Day to be honest about its “Red Tape” bill, which weakens reviews that safeguard Manitoba’s drinking water, said NDP Environment Critic Rob Altemeyer. While mandatory testing of water continues, the government is relaxing how frequently the systems that treat and distribute our drinking water are subject to reassessment, Altemeyer said.
The Pallister government has turned its back on workers by blocking an NDP bill that would have required the province to recognize and honour the constitutional right to collective bargaining, Labour Critic Tom Lindsey said today.
“All families benefit from the workplace advances that have been won through collective bargaining over many years in Manitoba,” Lindsey said. “But this government wants to tear up contracts and roll back those advances. This is completely disrespectful to workers, to families and to all Manitobans.”
Health Minister Kelvin Goertzen should stop dragging his feet and cover the exorbitant medical bill a Sprague man who suffered a heart attack and is saddled with a $118,000 medical bill after he was taken to a U.S. hospital, NDP health critic Matt Wiebe said today. He’s also refusing to say whether he will do anything to prevent other Manitobans from ending up with the same unfair burden due to a health crisis, Wiebe added.
Pallister Government Kills NDP Bill That Would Have Provided School Stability for Children in CFS Care
The Pallister government has voted down an NDP bill that would have gone a long way to providing stability in the lives of children in CFS care, Education Critic Wab Kinew said today.
“This bill would have ensured that children who’ve been taken into care would have been able to stay in the same school as before they were in care,” Kinew said. “It can be traumatizing for children who have left their families to also be taken from their familiar schools and classmates. Why would the government not want to reduce the stresses on children?”
