Pallister Government Misleads Families by Repackaging Bursary Program for Post-Secondary Students

The Pallister government is misleading families by trying to portray funding announced today as something new, NDP Education Critic Wab Kinew said.

“Today, the Pallister government tried to claim it was doing students a favour ¬– two days after they said they’ll make students play $58 million more in taxes,” Kinew said. “In reality, the amount of funding announced today is the same as last year – it’s just repackaged with earlier availability dates,” Kinew said.

Kinew called on the Pallister government to come clean and be honest with students and families about their misleading announcement. The only new funding in the government’s announcement is contingent on private sponsors increasing their support to two-thirds of the cost of scholarships, Kinew added.

“I’m all for making funding supports earlier, but that’s all they did today,” Kinew said. “If they really want to make post-secondary schooling more affordable, they should restore tax credits and cancel their tuition hikes.”
