Health Minister Must Overturn Ruling That put Heart Attack Patient on Hook for $118,000 Bill

Health Minister Kelvin Goertzen should overturn a ruling by his department that dismissed a heart attack patient’s request for help with his $118,000 medical bill from a U.S. hospital, NDP health critic Matt Wiebe said today.

“Through no fault of his own, Robin Milne was handed a huge medical bill after being sent from his home in Sprague to the U.S., where doctors saved his life,” Wiebe said. “The Pallister government should pay that bill and ensure that no other Manitobans face the same traumatic shock when fighting for their lives.”

Pallister Government Breaks Promise To Reveal Results of “Value for Money Audit”

Despite promising to show Manitobans the results of his “value for money” audit of government programs, Premier Brian Pallister is now refusing to reveal any information about it, documents received by the NDP show.

“Last June, the Pallister government vowed it would be transparent and promised it would release 97 per cent of the information in the audit of government programs,” NDP MLA James Allum said today. “Manitobans paid for this audit but the premier is now refusing to release any information. He is clearly breaking his promise of transparency and accountability.”

The premier launched his “value for money” audit of all government programs last summer. The audit was done by accounting firm KPMG for $740,000 and completed before the end of 2016.

Statement on Premier Pallister’s ‘Race War’ Comments

The Brandon Sun revealed today that Premier Pallister claimed in a closed door party meeting there is a ‘race war’ in Manitoba, before leaving for Costa Rica.

“Premier Pallister’s ‘race war’ comments are a divisive and unhelpful intervention in an already over-heated conversation”, Wab Kinew, NDP MLA for Fort Rouge said today.

“To claim behind closed doors that there is a ‘race war’ in your province and to then leave for a multi-week vacation in Costa Rica is not leadership – it’s irresponsible. The Premier should return to Manitoba immediately, apologize for his insensitive comments, and start discussions on solutions that work for everyone” said Kinew.
